Comments about the film

SUSAN SONTAG

Impulsos Ópticos en Progresión Geométrica seems so wonderful to me. It is not necessary to stop looking at the screen; on the contrary, it is fascinating and pure.

CRISTOBAL HALFFTER

The treatment of time in the film “Impulsos Ópticos…” by dividing them in spaces shorter and shorter, by submitting them to a constant and determined rhythm, makes me to feel so close to the world Aguirre is considering; I have already employed this formal system in some of my works, precisely in “lines and dots” and in “sequences”.

MANFRED MOHR

The kind of optical phenomenon that moves the spectator who is looking at the film cannot be transferred, told nor imagined. The direct look is essential to endure the tremendous hit we are suffering and which means a physical shock. It is a not a transferable experience… /… we are in front of a total spectacle. This movie is a drug…/ … One feels taken, immobilized, caught. It’s like a terrible dream.

In “Impulsos Ópticos en Progresión Geométrica” the colour is heard.

In the middle of the physical pain produced by the pictures, a terrified voice shouted “It’s War!”.

PABLO DEL BARCO

I do not know why at the end of Javier Aguirre’s movies I have the impression of light. In the film “Impulsos Ópticos en Progresión Geométrica” light becomes volume, extending its nature and occupying a rhythmic space by the calibrated superimposition of the colour.

JUAN MIGUEL GONZALEZ

In the movie “Impulsos Ópticos en Progresión Geométrica” the base is a mathematical operation…/ … It is easy to suppose that the visual experience the viewer has to endure is unprecedentedly violent. It is necessary to point out the words said by Aguirre himself: “both the eye and the ear feel directly wounded by a physical action with no subjective interpretations. The personal matters are out of question (“I am not moved by the violence in the movies”), as, even if you don’t want to, the aggressive charge of the film will act against you. In any case, if you do not look at the screen, the spectacle of all people in the cinema hall with their backs to the screen or with the bend arms to protect their eyes is something you have not probably seen before”.
